  PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Dear ACC Colorado Chapter Members,

I recently had the honor of attending the Colorado Supreme Court Admission Ceremony on behalf of the Association of Corporate Counsel. As I sat on stage looking out at a sea of a faces, the candidates’ displaying a mixture of fear and seriousness, I could not help but recall my own admission ceremony. I thought about what I would tell the candidates, and the counsel I would have given my younger self. I also took the opportunity to revisit A Lawyer’s Principles of Professionalism. I was so moved by the last Principle that a week later, I was still mauling it over in my mind.

  ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Artificial Intelligence: Navigating its potential uses and risks in the legal industry

Anyone who has ever seen Stanley Kubrick’s seminal 1968 film “2001: A Space Odyssey” will recall the quiet menace of HAL 9000, the supercomputer aboard the spaceship Discovery One that decided unceremoniously to kill its human masters rather than be disconnected or reveal the true nature of their space mission. Kubrick’s movie portrays the soft spoken, gentle-sounding HAL as a red-rimmed camera lens—all seeing, all knowing—that becomes progressively more menacing and sinister as the story unfolds. When astronauts Dave Bowman and Frank Poole decide to disconnect HAL in response to slight malfunctions they have detected, the computer takes matters into its own proverbial hands: It kills Poole while he is on a spacewalk, disconnects the life support mechanisms of hibernating crew members, then locks Bowman out of the ship when he tries to re-enter.

Federal Appeals Court Overturns Decades Of Precedent To Revive Workplace Claim

Overturning 40 years of precedent, the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals has just ruled that an employee’s failure to file an EEOC charge does not necessarily bar consideration of a private discrimination lawsuit. By concluding that an Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) charge is not a jurisdictional prerequisite to suit, the federal appeals court’s August 17 decision provides a new lifeline for disgruntled employees and former employees to bring suit against their employers (Lincoln v. BNSF Railway Company, Inc.).
